Dolly Parton moved to Nashville in 1964, the day after she graduated from high school in East Tennessee. She had big dreams and a small bag of dirty clothes.

The Wishy Washy

That first day, she took her laundry to the Wishy Washy laundromat. A young man named Carl Dean drove by and called out to her. She has said he was the first person she noticed who actually looked at her face while they talked.

A quiet marriage

They married on May 30, 1966, in a small ceremony in Ringgold, Georgia. As Dolly became a superstar on The Porter Wagoner Show and beyond, Carl stayed out of the spotlight. He almost never attended events, and fans joked that he was the most famous man nobody had seen.

The songs he inspired

Dolly has said her hit Jolene was inspired by a flirty bank teller who paid a little too much attention to Carl. The couple laughed about it for decades.

Carl Dean died in March 2025. Dolly called him the love of her life and said their nearly 60 years together were more than words could ever say.
