In 1944, a young model named Lauren Bacall was cast opposite Humphrey Bogart in To Have and Have Not. She was so nervous during filming that she kept her chin down to stop shaking, a look that became known as The Look.

"You know how to whistle"

Her line "You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and blow" became one of the most famous in movie history. Off camera, the two fell in love.

Married for life

They married in May 1945 at a farm in Ohio. They made four films together, including The Big Sleep and Key Largo, and had two children.

A whistle to remember

Bogart died of cancer in January 1957. Bacall was 32. She is widely reported to have placed a small gold whistle with him, a reminder of the line that brought them together.

Bacall went on to a long career on stage and screen. She often said that Bogart was the love of her life.
